In a conversation with a friend the other day collecting DVDs came up.
When I tell most people that I don’t collect DVDs and in fact don’t own a single movie – DVD, VHS or otherwise they tend to give me a funny look. With few exceptions I am not keen on watching movies over and over again, I don’t like watching reruns on TV much either so it doesn’t make sense for me to collect something I’m not going to use. In the rare case I want to watch a movie I’ve seen again I have always just rented it and now use Netflix, so I literally have the best DVD collection at my fingertips anyway, without having to worry about where to store all the damned disks. It’s not that I don’t like watching movies, in fact I do, very much, I’m just not one to watch a movie much more than twice, if that. It’s not that I can’t watch a movie more than once and not enjoy it; it’s just not a past time of mine so it would be superfluous for me to collect DVDs. People have given me DVDs of movies and TV shows I like as gifts and though I appreciate the thought they have all ended up in the trash (because I was sick of watching them sit there gathering dust) or given away. This isn’t to say I don’t like hanging on to things that may not serve an immediate purpose, in fact most people would look at some of the stuff I have and see it as useless (some of it is) but to me it’s not. Of course, what it comes down to is personal preference – I don’t see the point of collecting DVDs, you may. You may not see the point in keeping a broken Geiger counter, I do. I don’t see the point in keeping a trash bag full of packing peanuts, my Uncle does.
The other day the SciFi Channel ran a Firefly marathon – I have already seen every episode (and the movie) but I still enjoyed watching one of the best, however short (no thanks to Fox) SciFi TV series ever. So yes, there are times when I do like to watch THE SAME THING over and over again.
